Best trends of the weekend- Milan Fashion Week SS12

So far the SS12 season has been great! New York started out a little weak, with the exception of Alex Wang, Prabal and Rag & Bone, but London really picked up the rhythm and Milan is keeping it up.

I was very pleased with Gucci this season because finally Frida Giannini has brought it back to what it used to be –a plethora of luxurious glamour inspired by the golden eras of fashion. We have seen a lot of fringed skirts and drop waist dresses since New York kicked things off but no one has made then as well as Gucci so far. The 20's inspiration is going strong.
Versace, another Italian house who has had a little trouble getting its mojo back, has finally found its place in the current fashion panorama. Donatella is keeping Gianni's essence alive while pushing the brand forward. I love their SS12 collection and its abundance of two-piece tube skirt and top looks –a trend also very well pulled off at Pucci, despite their lose of focus this season.
Two of my favourites, Marni and Jil Sander, never disappoint. The first joined into the 20's silhouettes trend but approached it from its quirky and graphic way, which made it very interesting. Raf Simons, who is not rumoured to become the new creative director at YSL (!), went for more of a late 50's inspiration. He updated the looks by playing with geometric cuts. My favourite were the square necklines that we also saw ar Marni –so chic!

With the complete overload of street style it's hard not only to keep up with images and looks but also to even get excited about any of them.
New York and London are not that great when it comes to fashion insiders getting dressed to attend the shows but with Milan we start getting down to business as a sort of preparation that preps us for Paris.

I have blogged about Viviana Volpicella and Aurora Sansone quite a few times before. They are my absolute favourites when it comes to street style and they never ever disappoint. Milan is their territory and they really know how to own it.
I guess the best thing about Milan in September is that it is still warm there so editors and stylists can still have some fun with sandals and colourful short numbers. They will have time to impress us with their winter looks in February.

The lovely Elena Braghieri from Catching Instants is always there to capture V&A's best Milan looks, which she shares in her blog. It's thanks to her mostly that I get to enjoy street style even these days.

Prada SS12- It’s Greased Lightning!

I never need more reasons to love Miuccia Prada and yet every season she insists on adding new ones to the list. Prada's SS12 collection was perfect from beginning to end. We have seen a clear 50's inspiration on the brand's FW11 and Resort 2012 lines, which I obviously loved, and now Miuccia is still looking back in time but moving on.

The new collection is very influenced by the sexy lines and colours of the late 1950's. In fact, Prada specifically focused on the epitome of that era –Grease, set in 1959. Just as we saw on the SS11 collection, Miuccia has the ability of being quite literal in terms of graphics and prints while creating beautiful pieces everyone wants to wear because they also feel very forward.
The ever so famous 'Grease lightning' covers the back of silk jackets with embellished collars and sleeves. Its peculiar flame motifs are used at Prada to flank the leather bi-colour shoes, which made the models look like a queue of Hermes impersonators.
We saw a lot of pleated silks on skirts and dresses and heaps of jewellery. I really loved the latter because, while it was slightly ostentatious, very Italian, it also felt very modern and graphic. It complemented the embroidery and patterns of the jackets beautifully.
And don't forget the sunglasses. Miuccia has a way of creating the most-wanted model every season. She did it again at Miu Miu for FW11, after all.
