Best Dressed of the Weekend: A double dose of Olsen-ness

It seems like this weekend no one in Hollywood could stay indoors and so I have actually have to edit out my options of Best Dressed of the Weekend from quite a few options. I have been quite impressed with Elizabeth Banks' red carpet looks for her Hunger Games press tour. However, none of her looks were quite part of the weekend, alas...
Fortunately, both Ashley and her young sis Elizabeth were out this weekend, which more than made up for it. Ash, who we haven't seen a lot in the last few months, looked amazing in a very understated look with a black turtle neck jumper, a classic camel coat by The Row and Aquazzura heels.
Elizabeth Olsen has one of my favourite airport styles at the moment. Unlike most celebs she doesn't go for leather jackets and layers of black. I love her blue suede brogues, which she's been wearing quite a bit lately. The whole colour palette of her look is super chic and I am loving the cropped trousers that are just right.
And lastly, Diane Kruger at the reopening of the St. Regis Bal Harbour resort in Miami. Diane wore Jason Wu FW12, which was one of my favourite collections from NYFW.

I was quite happy that Paris Fashion Week ended late last week because it meant I would get to include some of the looks from the last big shows and after parties on today's post.

I think Sarah Jessica Parker's white Louis Vuitton look was one of my favourite of all fashion month. It wasn't the dress on its own but how she wore it with a black bra, which worked almost like a small bustier, and that amazingly decadent hairdo. It was glamourous and edgy but very classy. So good, in fact, that I can even overlook the fact that she is wearing white stilettos. Not that it's the first time...

Gwyneth Paltrow also wore Louis Vuitton for the brand's fashion week closing party in Paris. Hers felt a lot more modern than SJP's – a sexy double-chested tux jacket with satin lapels and tux capri pants. Gwyneth always knows how to make a statement out of simplicity. If you don't know what I mean, remember her Oscars look.

Elizabeth Olsen was seen out and about in New York in one of my favourite looks of her – a maroon velvet suit by The Row. I love the way she wore it with a slightly oversized shirt buttoned up (Karl Lagerfeld would be proud) and snakeskin pumps. I would perhaps gone for a smaller bag but this is a 5-star look regardless.

Every year after the Oscars I go to bed happy that my post is ready to go for a few hours later (I went to bed at 7am this morning) not realising that I will wake up in the middle of the day to an endless list of all the celebrities that attend the after parties. It would be pointless for me to try and choose all the ones that I liked because, truth to be told, everyone has really made an effort this year!

I really missed Elizabeth Olsen and Diane Kruger on the red carpet. Lizzy should have totally been nominated for her role in 'Martha Marcy May Marlene' and she would have given us one of those moments like Zoe Saldana in Givenchy that we will never forget. Instead, she looked exquisitely chic in Christian Dior at the Vanity Fair party. Diane Kruger I missed only because of her fashion sense. The woman has this ability to wear anything and look like it's been custom made by Coco Chanel herself. I was pleasantly surprised by her party look – a sexy Calvin Klein Collection number. This is a bit unlike her, which is why it works. The lace on the top makes the dress and adds a sexy edge that kind of reminds me of Julia Restoin-Roitfeld.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley continues to look incredible, this time in (J'adore!) a spring Antonio Berardi dress that does all the right things to her body. I always love Rosie in red!

Best Dressed of the Weekend: No one beats Viviana

Since the Oscars are tonight and it is only obvious that I will be devoting my Monday posts to the best gowns that walk the red carpet in LA I thought I'd move the Best Dressed of the Week to today. It wouldn't be fair not to talk about these four looks.

My absolute favourite this week is Viviana Volpicella. Every Milan Fashion Week I know that she will not disappoint. It looks like she is already thinking of spring so Viviana went for a head-to-toe MSGM floral ensemble of mismatched prints masterly combined and accessorised with black pumps and one of Sara Battaglia's signature bags.

The Spirit Awards that took place last night also delivered a few jewels that have only got me more excited about tonight. Elizabeth Olsen killed it once more in an exquisite Antonio Berardi number – a combo that makes me very happy! Shailene Woodley also went for a British designer with a Christopher Kane bejewelled top. The genius in this was letting the top be the protagonist. And I loved the golden-tip Loubs, a great touch. Zoe Saldana went for a more relaxed look in a Balmain mini-dress that she made look completely effortless and über-sexy. And I loved the neutral shoes with a killer platform.

This weekend I felt compelled to bring back the 'Best dressed of the Weekend' if only for Elizabeth Olsen. Her Chanel Haute Couture look for the premiere of her film in London is one of the best things I've seen on the red carpet as of late. I said we had to look out for her when I included her in one of my BTOTW posts in January and I am happy to say I wasn't wrong.
My second favourite is Hailee Steinfeld. I'm really digging this Clémence Poésy-inspired look. She's kept things age-appropriate but also very cool and forward. I love the mix of the Chanel jacket and he Jil Sander shirt. I guess Miuccia doesn't chose someone to be the face of her campaigns for no reason, right?
Karlie Kloss and Giovanna Battaglia are both in this week too with looks they wore to the same event. I am impressed that Karlie didn't go for a very 'open' dress as she usually does. This white number with the long fur gillet is extremely chic and needs no other accessory than her beautiful face and her flirty blue eyes. Giovanna is one of my best dressed people in the world. I really loved the silhouette of her white dress with the black detailing in the middle and how she accessorised it with simple hair and makeup, golden hoops and stunning feather pumps.

They say 'never judge a book by its cover' but I've never been keen on clichés. With a magazine it's exactly the cover that makes you decide whether to buy it. To me, it's about choosing a great picture that captures the most interesting piece inside.It's not about having every single story's title is on the cover. It really puts me off. So this month I've chosen my six favourite covers from the October 2011 issues.

My favourite is Harper's Bazaar Australia with Miranda Kerr. I love the pose and the styling. And I really like the different fonts and colours that make all the text work. I would say it' one of the best covers anyone's ever done in months.
I also really liked the Harper Bazaar Turkey cover with Lily Cole. The white dress with the metallic collar and the movement of the skirt read so well on the picture. The contrast with the brick on the back and the layout of text are great.
I was chuffed to find Elizabeth Olsen on the cover of Nylon. I feel like they're a perfect fit for each other. Though I do wish to see Elizabeth in high fashion mag covers soon.
Even though I'm not a fan of Tavi, I love the L'Officiel cover. I love the styling and the fact that a teenager is covering their 90th anniversary issue. It's kind of funny.
The Giambattista Valli peplum skirt is another cover hit. Even more so on Kristen Dunst. I just find it's a great cover to ease people into the FW11 collections.
And I loved Vogue Turkey because it shot FW11 LV in a non-boring way. No more navy and grey backgrounds to go with it, please.

I am really happy with this year's edition of Cannes film festival. Most people have made a good effort and it's paid off. Rachel McAdams and Penélope Cruz almost restored my faith in Marchesa. And I also started to believe that Pe can actually dress. Her Givenchy and Stella McCartney moments were definitely highlights of the festival.

Some other of my favourites have been slightly less talked about. Spanish actress Paz Vega rocked an Azzaro jumpsuit (a spin off of Carey Mulligan's Azzaro dress from last year's Cannes). I was impressed with how well she wore it. I loved the choice of shoes and the hair but I would have made the trousers straighter. Jane Fonda looked über-elegant in a blue gown and an amazing diamond and sapphire necklace. Clotilde Courau had one of those classic moments of a simple number with a trail in a champagne hue and Elizabeth Olsen showed not once but twice that I wasn't wrong in predicting we could expect great things from her.

The absolute star of the show for me was Fan Bing Bing. She has not only the best designer liaisons but an exquisite flair for fashion. She pulled off everything from a personally designed gown with Oriental motifs (which apparently took 4 months to make), to a couple of Versace Atelier (my two favourites) and  some Elie Saab Couture. Simply outstanding. I really hope she gets a role in a big period drama soon so we get lots of brilliant red carpet moments like these.

Dress me, sisters

It's been a while since we last saw Ashley and Mary-Kate making a public appearance. This time they were out for the launch of Textile Elizabeth and James and their sister Elizabeth, whom I already warned you is a new style icon in the making, also made an appearance since she's half of her sisters' inspiration. I liked her outfit a lot. It was very simple but very much in line with the American Indie film circles, so she's at least looking the part. Also, you can see the Olsen touch in her flares. Ash and MK, well, they looked awesome. They both wore E&J trousers from the upcoming FW11 line, which they mixed up with some Balenciaga and The Row respectively. I can't get over Ashley's fox jumper and how super cool she looks in it when paired up with the khaki pants and the Balenciaga shoes...

I then had a look at what's left of Elizabeth and James over at Net-a-Porter as well as at the brand's SS11 look book. The fact is that everything looks like it could have easily been taken out either Ash or MK's wardrobe. In fact, we have seen Ashley wearing a ruched yellow skirt similar to the dress below before, or Mary-Kate in a rabbit-trimmed blazer and slingback wedges. For those of you trying to get some of the twin's iconic pieces for less this is kind of a no-brainer. Also, I really like their mens line. I can't wait to meet James Olsen. Maybe Ashley wants to just make it a surprise for our wedding...

Best dressed of the weekend: Leather is in

I had been looking out for great celebrity spottings during the weekend but, apart from the classic Jessica Alba weekend moment, there was nothing I wanted to post about. That changed this morning when I came across these pictures of Kate Bosworth and Leighton Meester in Chloé and Michael Kors. You would think both dresses are by the same designer as they seem like the cocktail and gown version of the same dress, no? I love how the Chloé number looks very Bosworth (aka: girly but simple and not too form-hugging) and how Leighton looks much like an amazon. Her hair really compliments the look.

My other spotting (picture on the right) has me quite excited. Elizabeth Olsen (A & MK's younger sister) made her Sundance debut this weekend while presenting "Martha Marcy May Marlene", her first movie. She had had very small parts in her sister's films from back in the day and now she's breaking through. And I say I am excited because it sounds like she is very talented but also because she has clearly inherited the Olsen genes of beauty and style. She is incredibly cute! She's got that broad Olsen smile and her style, while very different from her sisers' fashion-forwardness, seems quite cool so far. What do you think?
