Glamour celebrates its 10th anniversary in Madrid

Last night Glamour Spain celebrated the 10th anniversary of the magazine with a garden party at the Italian Embassy in Madrid. But, of course, the night wouldn't have been complete without some awards being given. Eugenia Silva, Judit Mascó, Laura Ponte, Martina Klein, Vanessa Lorenzo and Verónica Blume were named 'Muses of Spanish Fashion'. And very rightly so, when Spanish fashion was still a baby they were already walking in Paris and Milan.
Giles Deacon was awarded 'Design Icon', Poppy Delevigne named as 'Trend Icon', Jason Lewis as 'Masculine Icon', and supermodel Lily Donaldson won the 'Beauty Muse' award.
I was quite impressed with a few of the guests but these on the right are my favourites. Poppy Delevingne would look like a goddess in a tracksuit, so this Julien McDonald dress she wore last night blew my mind. I hate being unfaithful to Poppy but Eugenia Silva rocked my world in her ultra sexy Nicolas Vaudelet. The insane side-slit and embroidered top were as daring as they were chic. Martina Klein went for a red Lanvin number. I loved how she went for a lot of skin at the bottom and a lot of volume on top. Nieves Álvarez probably didn't try very hard but when you're so elegant and you're wearing Giambattista Valli Couture you don't have to.

I am such a huge fan of Cannes Film Festival. As far as cinema-related festivities go this is definitely my favourite over the Oscars and the Golden Globes. Everything is just unmatchably unrivalled in the Côte d'Azur. This year's edition of the festival opened yesterday with the premiere of Wes Anderson's "Moonlight Kingdom", which I can't wait to see, and the traditional morning photo calls and evening red carpets.

Who better to kick things off that queen of chic and elegance Diane Kruger? We are only on day one and she has already raised the bar a lot for the ladies coming after her. However, I will not speak too soon because last year's greatest hit by Armani Privé came towards the end of the festival.

For the day photo call press event Diane wore a burgundy Versus dress with a pleated skirt and strappy side details. It was a super chic moment, which was made even better by the Jimmy Choo Sandals she wore. I loved the mirroring effect of the gaps in the shoes and the sides of the dress.

For the red carpet in the evening she slipped into a Giambattista Valli Couture gown in a stunning shade of aquamarine. I don't know whether it's the fact that she's German so there is something cold and mysterious about her but she adds a Je-ne-sais-quoi to everything she wears that I love.

Best Dressed at the 2012 SAG Awards

Since I missed my opportunity to post about the best Golden Globe looks a few weeks ago I thought I'd post about the Screen Actors Guild Awards that took place last night in Los Angeles. I have to say that so far award season has been really great in terms of red carpet, people are really trying their best! I don't think I've seen anyone particularly badly dressed at the SAG awards this year, which is a relieve but makes the process of choosing the best dressed a tad harder.
My absolute favourite was Zoe Saldana in Givenchy Couture. First of all, kudos for wearing something that was only shown in Paris about a week ago and, secondly, for rocking it on the red carpet. After Zoe's unforgettable Givenchy Couture moment at the 2010 Oscars you understand why she would go for one of Tisci's creations again. Not that anyone needs an excuse...
Julianna Margulies, from 'The Good Wife', is right after Zoe. Her Calvin Klein Collection dress was exquisitely simple and super chic. She is a very elegant woman both in an out of the show, there is something very old Hollywood glamour about her that I love. I really do hope she might go for an Armani Privé soon...
Tilda Swinton looked very much like she'd just come down from the Olympus in an off-white Lanvin dress. It was refreshing to see her in something other than Haider Ackermann, whose work I love but it was starting to look like Tilda was doing a life advertorial. And I love the hair!
How Natalie Portman has gone back to looking like that after giving birth totally escapes me, she looks ravishing. Her Giambattista Valli gown is one of the best things she's worn in a while. The boozy red hue really suits her and I love how unfussy the skirt is and how all the details are on the top.
Viola Davis was a great surprise. We haven't seen much of her until now apart from premiere looks but after this Marchesa moment I am looking forward to the Oscars. Everything is absolutely perfect about her look and I am loving the Maryling-esque hairstyle. Who would've thought someone could look this good in Marchesa?

The last edition of Haute Couture that closed yesterday was, in my opinion, one of the best of the last few years. I was deeply disappointed by Valentino. Last season it seemed like they were finally going in the right direction but all we have seen this week were all the same dresses they have been producing for the last couple of years, only in different palettes. I think it's time to get the talks of a substitute for Maria Grazia and Pier Paolo cracking.
Otherwise I am thrilled with what's been sent down the runway. The return of Atelier Versace lived up to its expectations. I would probably say it's been my favourite collection of the whole week. What Donatella did with the metallic panels and the shape of the body was superb.
I also particularly loved the high-and-low play that Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy and Jean Paul Gaultier had in their collections. Gaultier's "polo shirt" dress and varsity jacket look were an innovative take on current punk rock that was perfectly suited to the Amy Winehouse theme on the catwalk. What was most interesting about Tisci is how he managed to incorporate most of the elements he has made iconic on the Givenchy mainline –stars, studs, luxury sportswear garments– and how he mixed them with his take on the traditional Indian wedding jewellery. Although the most remarkable about his collection is the craftsmanship, especially on the individually sewn pieces of crocodile onto silk.
Chanel was more about the extraordinary setting (a catwalk that looked like a plain inside the Petit Palais) than about the innovation of the clothes. Everything was beautiful and very... like Karl had designed the Pan American uniform. My favourite thing about the collection were the bejewelled tights, which created a magical effect with the dresses.

I am a huge fan of what Mr Armani is doing for the Privé line. His last collections have had great success on the red carpet and I feel like he's on a roll. His lime green haute couture collection was spotless, sculptural and ultra modern. Lime green is one of my favourite colours (as you can tell by some of the font on my blog and Twitter) so this is right up my street.
There was a bit of Dior in the latest Giambattista Valli collection. I loved his take on the "bar jacket" but I thought he failed (in lack of a better word) to create that fantasy that he normally brings to all of his collections. However, I did appreciate looks like the above where we saw a tougher side to him, I wish there had been more of it.
Elie Saab was my pleasant surprise of the season. It's almost like they knew Valentino was going to disappoint and decided to take the spotlight. The entire collection was incredibly beautiful and dreamy. They did a lot of see-through but in such a refined feminine way you are only half aware. And and I am absolutely positive we are going to see 80% of this collection all over the red carpet in the next few months.

Bestest Dressed of the Weekend: Anne's Oscar-worthy gown

Because I always make the Best Dressed of the Weekend post on Sunday night there is always a risk that I might miss one or two looks between then and Monday morning. Luckily, I came across these pictures of Anne Hathaway before it was too late –I hereby create the 'Bestest Dressed of the Weekend' post.
The Resort 2012 Giambattista Valli black gown Anne (or Rachel Zoe) picked for the US State Department gala could have easily been a perfect look for a non-nominated Oscars attendee. I would actually choose this dress over the vintage Valentino gown Hathaway wore for the last Oscars' ceremony that she hosted.
This look was exquisitely elegant. The tied back hair, the rouge lipstick, finger and toe nails, and the subtle necklace struck all the right chords. And Anne looked so happy. Perhaps she used this occasion to properly celebrate her engagement to Adam Shulman. In any case, a floor length black dress is always good company for a diamond ring.

This weekend I didn't have it so easy to find four really well dressed women for my Best Dressed of the Weekend post. Thankfully, Kate Bosworth always comes to save the day. Sometimes twice.

The biggest hit of the weekend had to be Kate Bosworth in Chanel for the brand's intimate dinner in LA. I love a woman who can wear all black. The key, as Kate knows, is in the textures. So she wore this matte silk blouse with a tweed mini skirt. I loved the combination of the two and the signature Chanel detailing down the shirt and around the sole of the stunning leather wedges.

Kate Bosworth hit number 2 was a Burberry Prorsum printed dress from their amazing SS12 collection. I am in love with those African-inspired graphic Burberry prints for next season and I love how Kate wears them with a very sort of bohemian yet sophisticated air. And it was a nice change from the Chanel look.

And third on the list is Bianca Brandolini in Giambattista Valli. She always looks incredible, especially when she wears Giamba. But when you have legs like those and such beautiful long hair it's just easier to pull anything off, non?

They say 'never judge a book by its cover' but I've never been keen on clichés. With a magazine it's exactly the cover that makes you decide whether to buy it. To me, it's about choosing a great picture that captures the most interesting piece inside.It's not about having every single story's title is on the cover. It really puts me off. So this month I've chosen my six favourite covers from the October 2011 issues.

My favourite is Harper's Bazaar Australia with Miranda Kerr. I love the pose and the styling. And I really like the different fonts and colours that make all the text work. I would say it' one of the best covers anyone's ever done in months.
I also really liked the Harper Bazaar Turkey cover with Lily Cole. The white dress with the metallic collar and the movement of the skirt read so well on the picture. The contrast with the brick on the back and the layout of text are great.
I was chuffed to find Elizabeth Olsen on the cover of Nylon. I feel like they're a perfect fit for each other. Though I do wish to see Elizabeth in high fashion mag covers soon.
Even though I'm not a fan of Tavi, I love the L'Officiel cover. I love the styling and the fact that a teenager is covering their 90th anniversary issue. It's kind of funny.
The Giambattista Valli peplum skirt is another cover hit. Even more so on Kristen Dunst. I just find it's a great cover to ease people into the FW11 collections.
And I loved Vogue Turkey because it shot FW11 LV in a non-boring way. No more navy and grey backgrounds to go with it, please.

Yesterday, on my post for Harper's Bazaar España, I wondered who had designed the dress that Charlotte Casiraghi wore to his uncle's wedding reception.

I then toyed with the idea that it might be Valentino because I highly doubted it was Chanel at all. But now the mystery is resolved.

Gaimbattista Valli unveiled his first ever Haute Couture collection only a few minutes ago in Paris and Charlotte's dress was one of the last ones to walk the runway. Both dresses are absolutely identical and they both include the cape I'm so keen on. The only difference is Charlotte's belt, my favourite part of her accessories, which was borrowed from a different look from the collection. The red number from the catwalk show actually finds inspiration from an unexpected place: the traditional attire worn by the cardinals of the Catholic church. The designer did a sexy take on this robe and even included the traditional skullhat.

Peplum déjà vu

Fashion Month finally wrapped up yesterday in Paris. And when I say finally mean it in a relieving way because it takes quite a bit of effort to keep up to speed with the collections. I don't know if it was just me but it feels like they speed it up more and more every season. I can't imagine the state some editors are in. I wouldn't be surprised if the Bvlgari Spa in Bali was overbooked this weekend. I have managed to catch up with all the collections, which makes me happy because it means I'm not behind anymore. I have decided that it's too boring to just post pictures of the collections and rant about how much I like them (or not) so I'm going to post about the bit of them that I loved or that caught my attention. Like this one below. I loved Giambattista Valli's FW11 collection but I was surprised to see him introduce similar bold coloured peplums to the over-featured Jil Sander ones from SS11. It's not that I don't like them (even if these are attached) but they're just old news, n'est pas?

Giambattista's boutique opening

I still remember how Giulia jumped up and down (literally but in a classy way) when she first heard Giambattista Valli was opening his first store ever in Paris at the beginning of the year. She loves his clothes to the point of madness. And so does the rest of the world. He has an exquisite eye to create modern shapes reminiscent of the golden eras of fashion to make a woman feel and look beautiful. Even even more so if the woman is already stunning as it is. That's the case of Diane Kruger (not in Chanel, for once), Lapo Elkann's ex (who he didn't deserve anyway) Bianca Brandolini and Industrie's über-chic Editor-at-Large Elizabeth von Guttman. They all went out to celebrate the store opening at the Rue Royale, which coincided with the designer's collaboration line with Longchamp sold exclusively at the new boutique.

In case you don't remember (I doubt you don't) here is the SS11 collection. Not Giulia's or my favourite because he tried to do the same kind of minimalistic thing everyone was doing. But it improves about halfway through when the leopard comes into scene. (Sorry about the quality, couldn't find the full show better).

Round Monday

As promised, we are back to business at soVIPzone. Giulia and I have been busy over the last week and we were both lucky enough to catch simultaneous colds, which reached their peak over the weekend, so neither of us could update the blog. Fortunately, we're feeling a little better with the beginning of the week and even though we're still quite busy again we couldn't go another day without a new post.

I can't tell you how happy I was to find so many incredible celebrity pictures this evening when I got home after a long day. Doing my daily website tour I couldn't believe how many of my favourite people had been wearing some of my favourite designers. They have made my Monday night so much better! Jessica Alba wore Valentino (and a kind of First Lady hair-do) at an event in Hollywood and she looked beautiful and elegant. Anne Hathaway melted my heart with a smile (yet again) in a beautiful sequinned Oscar de la Renta dress from SS11 during one of her appearances on the 'Love and other Drugs' press tour. Carey Mulligan slipped into a red Prabal Gurung and looked stunning at the British Independent Film Awards. Vicky Becks delighted us with yet another of her famous airport looks —this time in a Giambattista Valli cape-coat. And my favourite on-screen couple at the moment, Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling, looked as cool as it gets —her in one of my favourite collections, SS11 Erdem, and him in a biker jacket brilliantly accessorised with a paisley-print scarf. What a day!

Gossip Girl Fashion: "War at the Roses"

This time let me warn you loud and clear for your own good. If you haven't seen this episode of Gossip Girl and don't want to know what happens, stop reading now. There are major spoilers ahead.
This week's episode of Gossip Girl had much less action than last week's and yet it's surprises and turns completely exceeded the previous episode. The fashion, however, wasn't bad but definitely not up to GG standard. Remember, don't keep reading if you don't want to know!
First I'd like to say of how jealous I am of those upper-East-side breakfasts we see every week. My life would simply be amazing if I could start my day with pancakes and crepes and fresh orange juice on the table every morning. I simply wanted to point that out as they're a usual to the show.

Blair was, by far, the fashion queen of this episode. She first shows up at Chuck and her "treaty negotiations" in a green tweed Giambattista Valli skirt suit with a printed Chris Benz blouse underneath. The outfit is definitely more apt for older women but it somehow works on Blair as well. And please note how she's back to using headbands...
Her other outfit (more age-appropriate) is the J Mendel dress she wears to her birthday party on the episode. I really really liked how the dress drapes down one side of the chest and Blair is wearing her hair to the other side, as if playing with asymmetry.

The boys, as usual, paraded around in a variety of checked shirts and jackets. However, I have to mention the Dan/Missoni moment. I am quite positive this was a coincidence but I loved the contrast between Dan's checked red shirt and the classic Missoni print on the chair he's sitting on. Genius. And just as much I liked Nate's checked jacket. I was glad to see him in a plain shirt for a change and his outfit was dimple but kind of refreshing. Although someone needs to sort out his hair.

Another of my favourite moments this week was Blair freaking out about the choice of flowers in her birthday arrangements. It reminded me so much of that scene from The Devil Wears Prada when Miranda says: "Do I smell freesias? If I see freesias anywhere I will be very disappointed".

And this week's guests were (or was) the best so far. Or, at least, my favourites. None other than Rachel "Bananas" Zoe made a cameo that we'll remember for life. I could barely believe my eyes when she appeared at Blair's party. Also attending the celebration were Joe Zee, who I find to be quite bland but people seem to like, and American designer (I sound like Heidi Klum) Cynthia Rowley.

And this, ladies and gentleman, was the highlight of the episode. One of the most memorable GG scenes so far. Blair dashes across the room and accidentally pushes a waiter who, then, pushes Rachel Zoe to the ground.  She falls on her little bum, looks up and says that she's alright. (Quite good acting here so far)

The worst part comes when she tries to hold on to the table to get back up and she spills all the chocolate fondant over her blonde locks. Camera moves away to capture Joe Zee's cringing at the scene.

And then, Rachel goes beyond with her acting and delivers her tagline with that little pause we love in the middle. I was simply in awe.

And to top it all off, THIS. If watching Rachel Zoe so involved in a Gossip Girl episode wasn't enough, Chuck and Blair had to put the cherry on top with an extremely aggressive making out, which I'm shocked even made the final cut. But I'm not complaining. Although I wonder where things will go from here...

Unusual suspects

Jessica Biel's promotional tour for the A-Team has left me completely baffled. Not only she managed not to horrify us on a daily basis with her appearances outfits but she even looked fantastic two or three times. The clear winner was the red Giambattista Valli dress she wore for the London premiere (where else?) and that she accompanied with the wild hair trend Coco spotted a while ago. It was a beautiful and simple look but, for the first time with her, it had a bit of an edge thanks to the hair. During the time before and after the British premiere she was also seen in amazing outfits the likes of the Phillip Lim one below which proved she can look different but good. I am just hoping she keeps it up so we have to avoid more of her embarrassing red carpet moments.

It was precisely because of Biel's unexpected turn that I started wondering whether Eva Mendes would experience something similar. This morning she attended the Regis & Kelly show in a (Dior/de la Renta?) dress as part of a look that is one of the best things I've ever seen her wear. The sunglasses were to-die-for and the shoes totally spot-on. Like Biel, I have disliked Mendes' style for longer than I can remember, which is probably why I'd be so fascinated with her undergoing a Biel-type style makeover.

Giulia's SS10 musts

I have gone through my favourite e-tail spots and chosen my season's must-haves. For me, it's all about muted colours (loving the nude this season), a bit of black (always!) and a dash of gold and pink without going too crazy. Enjoy!

a night to remember?

I am deeply and utterly uninspired as of late, hence the lack of posts around here. Hopefully, with the imminent arrival of the holidays this situation will change. In the meantime, I could not ignore such an event as the Met Ball. It certainly was an odd night, to say the least. Celebrities swapped roles and some seemed as if they were in those clothes to convince the world once and for all that they are not only tasteless but complete nutters. But some others, the few, lived up to the expectations or were simply pleasant surprises.

I AM IN LOVE... and she doesn't know it.

For those of you thinking "WTF?", I will say: it works on them and it wouldn't on anybody else.

Totally unexpected but extremely successful nonetheless.

It was pretty much a Marc overdose what that night was. I have always said it and I always will: He is overrated.

Talk about tables turning... Blake looks slick and sexy even when the dress is not my cup of tea while Leighton, poor thing, was somehow cheated. I like the print, though.

Simple cuts with colours that work great with their skin tones.

Wait a few years and that photo up there will have another member.

Daria has no need to accessorize with such a cleavage and that pair of jeweled eyes. Unlike our little friend on the right, just don't.

Not like  I was blown away but still, at least it wasn't wacko.

I am speechless before this.
