Oscars 2010

It is the first time I have stayed up to watch the Oscars and I am elated. I feel part of a very cool club. But it does comes as a shock that I am making myself blog at half two in the morning. I have to admit I was part of the group of people who were not expecting much from this year's red carpet. Thankfully, my expectations were completely overwhelmed from the very moment I saw Diane Kruger. My favourite numbers, though, were Zoe Saldana's dream of a Givenchy, Sarah Jessica Parker's Chanel (that Karl made only for her), and the first Dries Van Noten (and FW10!) on the carpet worn by Maggie Gyllenhaal. But my favourite part of the gala was dapper Robert Downey Jr. in the most amazing combo to ever walk the runway —by Lanvin, of course.

the copper globes

It has been a while since any award gala succeeded in getting to a fashionista's heart. And this year Golden Globes has been no different. However, I have come to the conclusion that if you will fail to even be vaguely fashion-forward you might as well stick to the classics.

Drew Barrymore has very much blossomed into a very interesting fashion personality. This Versace is not only on trend for next season but the bulgy detailing on the shoulder and hip add that edge she always needs. Emily Blunt, however, went for something a bit more restrained yet very gripping because of the way the fabric has been wrapped around. Plus, that haircut is a keeper.

Maggie Gyllenhall might or might not be aware that she doesn't have the most gifted face in Hollywood but she certainly knows how to compensate. Again, the subdued detailing makes her Roland Mouret captivating. Sandra Bullock gave me a big surprise. I loved how Coco's Tea Party chose her dress as the most unexpected colour, it is all about the hue.

Black doesn't really ever go wrong. I love how January Jones was one of the few to choose a high neckline. It made her Lanvin kind of intriguing and her casual hair-do added to that. Julia Roberts looked quite alluring in a very straightforward version of the LBD and the fact that she went into the YSL archive to get it really gives her bonus point in my book.

I was sad to hear from my flatmate that Julianne Moore was in the worst dressed list. My favourite moment of the night was when Tom Ford was asked if he approved of her dress and he almost spit out a "duh", noting that he is very good friends with Nicolas Ghesquière. And, of course, Ashley (the future Mrs. soVIPzone) in a flirtatious electric blue Erdem that takes my breath way. She also wore the Manolos from Sex and The City, which only gives me more ideas of how to propose.

ORANGE is the new pink

It takes time and good effort to kick a king colour out but, above all, it takes a bored audience in need of a fresher proposition. And this is the case of good ol’ pink. It has been one of the key hues for decades, predominating in fashionistas’ and self-proclaimed girly girls’ wardrobes. But the time always comes when change calls for itself and we can’t but applaud. Orange is quickly catching up taking advantage of pink’s decadence. The occurrence of such a change could not go unnoticed on the red carpet. Have a look at the innovative celebrities who took a risk when the process was only starting out.

Sophia Bush and Victoria Beckham were two of the first ones who dared to cover their skin with the bold colour. They both went for simple cuts and subtle draping and accessories that didn’t get much attention away.

American indie princess Kristen Dunst also chose a very simplistic silhouette in a darker shade and accompanied it with white retro accessories. Cameron Diaz found a very sexy short dress in a dark orange as well. In her case cuteness in brought into the picture by a decreasing line of ruffles.

Gucci’s resort 2009 collection introduced orange in responsible doses to a major part of the collection. It was this maxi dress, however, that is almost an homage to the new king colour. Natasha Poly wore it to Gucci’s 70th Anniversary with her hair down, as did Blake Lively also showcasing her golden threads.

The last famous portrayer of the latest popular colour has been Maggie Gyllenhaal, who wore a beautifully laced and semi-see-through dress that definitely matched her adorable green eyes. Are we looking at the next style transformation à la Gwyneth?
