wear art

GaryHumeforMarniFW10
This is not the first time I talk about Marni's FW10 collection. In fact, I pretty much elevated it to the heavens in the review I wrote about it during last Milan Fashion Week. After that, we saw it in action worn by Sasha Pivovarova, Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl at the Met Ball. And now, after buyers have made up their minds and a bit over a month from the first of the Fall collections hitting the stores, brands such as Marni start to release further details about some of their products.
If you look back at the last collection from Consuelo Castiglioni you will remember how the designer included arty printed t-shirts to go with her innovative silhouettes and interesting colour palette. As it turns out, the designs of the t-shirts were created Gary Hume, a British designer known for his simplification of colour. An explanation is rather out of the question once one glances at Hume's work with Castiglioni's past of bold colours and simplified designs in mind, no?
I'd quite like to get one for myself had I not have to save the banging £437 they cost (even if they're made of silk). Would you spend that much on a t-shirt?

Being the keen blogger that I am I always have this urge to try and find new creatively exciting things to post on soVIPzone. This proves to be quite the challenge as I try to diversify content and post more than once a day. For the last few weeks I've been keeping an eye on a website called Nowness. Every day, everything from photography to short films to painting and fashion are posted on the website. But do not be mistaken, this is not a snobby spot to show the product of deranged wannabes; everything contained in the Nowness is 100% art. These below are a few of my favourites so far.
March 11th, 2010 - Such Flare! (Click here to watch it)

March 24th, 2010 - Off-Screen Romance (Click here to see the rest)

italian cubism

March is a month that makes me happy. My birthday and the start of the spring coincide halfway through the month and that means I can start stocking up on items for the new season. This is why this morning I decided to post about one of my favourite collections so far —Consuelo Castiglioni's Marni. Nothing could be more glorious than a sunny London morning with a cup of coffee, Mozart's operas on the background, and Casteglioni's creations to behold.

Having a longer and closer look at the collection earlier this morning, a certain piece of art suddenly popped into mind. I see Marni as the clothing equivalent of Picasso's cubist reinterpretation of Las Meninas by Velázquez. Drawing similarities between Casteglioni and Picasso might be a daring thing to do, some might argue, but their creative processes are not afar. Just as Pablo, Consuelo has used staples and reinvented them by means of shape and colour. Like cubism, Marni is not apt for amateurs, it requires years of close scrutiny and appreciation. Are you a Marni acolyte?

morning oddness

I have watched this video several times and I am still dubious. I might happen to lack an artistic eye, which I would find rather upsetting. Please watch the video and let me know if you agree or can help me figure out any of the following:
1. Is Tilda part of a freakishly-big-calfs club? (I know a person like that and I thought he was a one-off)
2. Are we supposed to think, after watching the video, that Temperly dresses are suitable for any occasion from a cocktail party to, say, hiking?
3. Does the video follow a chronological storyline? If so, where is Tilda carrying the second dress she changes into? And where does she leave the first one?
4. Do you think they binned the dresses after shooting or they dry cleaned them and gave them to Tilda?
5. Are the random script lines essential to understanding anything that is to be understood?
Please, help me sort this out. I can't sleep.
I'm off.

ancient mode

Every Christmas I seem to find something very special in fragrance ads. They certainly don't do their job —I never even consider buying essence of this or eau of that— but I literally can't stop looking. I love the one for L'Eau Ambrée by Prada. The first time I saw it (the same happened with the SS09 print advert) I couldn't stop thinking about the frontons of the buildings in ancient Rome and Greece. I've always loved how artists managed to sculpt every figure in such detail that the most minute pleat and wrinkle weren't missed. And the whole group in the composition had the shape of an isosceles triangle so that it would fit in the top structure. Finally, I just looked at a few collections that took inspiration from the ancient Rome and Greece —be it from the art or otherwise.
