Currently obsessed with Sonam Kapoor’s style

I have to admit it usually takes me a while to get used to new celebrity faces. I like my usual suspects a bit too much sometimes. But every once in a while someone catches my attention and it's precisely because of how seldom this happens that I always know they're good.
This is the case of Sonam Kapoor, who I have been seeing everywhere lately and whose style I've become a huge fan of. I can't quite put my finger on how she does it but there is always something very lady-like about all her looks. Very sophisticated and put together. But there is also something incredibly modern about how she wears things.
I was first very pleasantly surprised with her subtle Burberry moment at the show in London last week. She wore a simple trench coat with a striking trim and hinted a pleated skirt underneath. I think I properly fell in love because of this Salvatore Ferragamo look she rocked last week. And confirmation came only a few days ago when she attended the Dolce & Gabbana fashion show in Milan wearing one of the famous dresses from the SS12 collection. But my absolute definite favourite so far is Sonam in Roberto Cavalli. She also attended the show in Milan yesterday and looked incredibly chic! She pulls of the mix of snake and leopard print with the fur detailing like she does it every day. This moment makes me think of what Olivia Palermo would be like if she had an edge.

Collage Sunday- Christine Baranski
Christine Baranski
Imdb, christine-b.org
It's funny that the reason why I'm doing a Collage Sunday today is the same reason why I haven't done one for a while. That reason is "The Good Wife". I followed a friend's advice to start watching it and I was instantly addicted. And that is what a lot of my weekends have been devoted to since.
The show is entertaining and cleverly written and Julianna Margulies does an incredible job as the main character. But it's not her that I wanted to post about.

Christine Baranski is one of the supporting actors in the show. And when I say supporting I mean she has one of those parts like Helena Bonham Carter's in "The King's Speech" where the acting is so good the character should be called a main.
You might recognise Christine from other supporting roles in "Mamma Mia", "How the Grinch stole Christmas" or "Chicago". It's hard not to notice her attractive features and elegant style. And I do mean elegant. She carries herself with a lot of grace, always dresses appropriately and even her mannerisms are elegant —the way she flicks her hair or holds her chin.
She apparently had a slow start in acting and performing, which is why it has taken her this long to score better roles. Don't miss her on "The Good Wife", you have two seasons to catch up with and a third one will start airing in September!

- Happy Sunday!

TITLESheikha Mozah
Sheikha Mozah
Last night I caught up with some of the news of the world to make sure the apocalypse hadn't started while I was in Wales. That's how I stumbled upon Sheikha Mozah, Qatar's first lady. There's an elegance and flair for fashion that it's hardly found in European royalty.
Like Rania of Jordan, Sheikha dresses appropriately to the occasion in quite simple but strikingly beautiful dresses, mostly full length and of Empire silhouette, which she wears with a cool attitude that makes her remind me of Grace Jones. During her recent visit to the Spanish monarchs in Madrid she wore an extremely elegant ivory dress with matching blazer and turban (I love!) and tan leather clutch and belt (very Colonial Ralph Lauren/Hermès).
The fashion highlight of her visit was the ss11 Haute Couture Chanel gown worn by Anja on the catwalk. It feels like it's people like her that Haute Couture has survived for. She is a big fan of the French house, as she is of Dior, and the one reason why I might give the royal wedding a go.

Collage Sunday, 06.02.11

CS-MischaBartonHaving Mischa Barton as the centre of our Collage Sunday seems a little anachronistic, I know. But when Giulia did her Rachel Zoe's girls post I felt like there was a main figure missing. It would have been unfair to simply add a couple of pictures of Mischa in it because, even though she's not fashion-relevant at the moment, hers and Marissa's wardrobe in The O.C. marked a before and after on the role of fashion on TV (at least for younger, hipper audiences than Sex and the City's). Mischa and her alter ego personified the ultimate boho chic style (brought to perfection in the Missoni look below and in this other one) in the most effortless of ways. She seldom wore heels on TV and every bag design Chanel ever made was worn by Marissa to school. In 2006 Mischa left the show in style wearing Chanel's SS06 closing look paired up with gladiator sandals for her graduation after three years of continuous hits.

On a more personal note I'd like to comment on The O.C.'s influence on my friends' and my own fashion sense. This show encouraged in us the idea of fashion as a way to express yourself in a natural way. And because of that, and because of how much some of us tried to emulate it I'd like to dedicate this post to my friend María. Her Prada boots and D&G tops were the Coop to my Cohen argyle jumpers.
I'm off.

Anna Superstar

It's been said that no one loves fashion as much as Anna dello Russo. I can't think of a single argument against that statement. Working with clothes is one thing but integrating fashion as a whole into your life is more than that. She wears it, breaths it and dreams it. Well, I reckon no one loves Anna dello Russo as much as I do. I had never been so inspired, entertained and excited about anyone since I first found out about Anna Wintour (it must run in the name) I can't remember how long ago. I can feel criticism coming her way because of the way she is being exposed on the media but I find this AdR craze completely understandable. The woman has worked in fashion for over 20 years and it's only now that she gets not only the recognition but the attention she deserved, so I say let her enjoy her life —no matter if that means launching a fragrance or making an album. I'd listen to AdR on my iPod everywhere!
Adr10magazine
Her latest venture has been appearing on the new cover of 10 magazine. She opens the issue with a goofy pose, dressed in Balmain and shot by Giampaolo Sgura. I am not a big follower of the magazine so I can't talk about facts but the photographer choice seems to have come from the model herself, who often works with him for her Vogue Nippon editorials. The "Let's celebrate" title on the cover might not be referred to her story inside but the pictures seem to celebrate Anna, her style and her work by re-enacting (perfect verb for someone who doesn't wear things twice) some of her most famous looks. My favourite is the pale pink Francesco Scognamiglio, which she originally wore with a policeman hat and which she substituted with the cherries she was wearing when I met her.
And to finish today's post —we could call it Saturday dello Russo— take a look at her unpacking in Paris joined by Sarah Rutson (who's got the sexiest accent). You might have seen Anna getting ready before but you've never seen her unpack. Behold.
I'm off.

AdReam world

I still get surprised everyday at the quantity of tweets (Goddess) Anna dello Russo produces per day. It is so refreshing and inspiring that someone so relevant and distinct in the industry takes time to share her life and thoughts with all of us trying to make it. There is nothing pretentious about her, only a deep love for fashion and the desire of sharing that love with similar people. All of this seems incredibly touching and inspiring to me because I think of fashion during the whole day and dream of it all through the night. It's a passion that goes beyond material things and popular names on tags. It's a lifestyle.
Today, Anna tweeted a couple of pictures of herself with Cucciolina wearing a SS08 Cavalli dress (my favourite collection from the last 10 years) while working on a shoot with Tommy Ton in the little Italian town of Cisternino where she has a house and, wait for it, an AdR branded pool that Tommy Ton has had the privilege to literally drench himself in dello-Russo-ness.
ADRtwitterhits
Another of the aspects that I love about Anna the most is the fact that she blogs about looks that she'd love to wear. This might seem silly but, coming from someone who has worn and daily wear the best designers in the world, it is a sincere sign of how down to earth she is. And so, given that she is wearing some of my favourite looks from the past few seasons, I've taken the liberty of choosing a few of the pieces I would personally love to see on her.

Oh, Jackie

The word 'icon' is so overused these days it has almost lost all its true meaning. The way I see it, real icons, just like true friends, can be counted with one hand. They can't be dated, as they must inspire throughout time. When I try to think of true icons of the past I often can't mention more than three: Jane Birkin, Grace Kelly and Jackie O. Which is was I was more than thrilled when I found out the History Channel was shooting a miniseries named The Kennedys, starring Katie Holmes as Jackie.
JackieO-Katie
I, then, started thinking of the current trends and designers Jackie would wear if she lived today. Back in the day the choice was more limited —to Chanel, Givenchy and Dior, all of which she would probably still wear today. I think she would have loved this season's trend of muted colours, nudes and pastels. She would be popular for wearing a lot of Chloé and she would have probably been one of the first women to properly embrace Phoebe Philo's collections for Céline. It would have been a more modern Jackie but one people would have remembered throughout time anyway.

Anna is the new Anna

There used to be a time when everyone knew right away the last name to follow "Anna". Up until the era of bloggers and editors as celebrities Wintour was the only possible option. That has changed now. Anna dello Russo is not only influential in the fashion world but she is also fabulously fashion savvy and as friendly as it gets. Now the star of fashion week has designed ten t-shirts for the 10th anniversary of Yoox. Every single one of them is already sold out, which explains in a nutshell how close to every fashionista's heart she is. Giulia and I are dying for one. I'd be just as happy having her sign a plain grey tee. But one step at a time.
DelloRussotshirt
Take a look at this video below where Anna-the-Goddess explains the concept of the collection herself. And also, would it be humanly possible to look better than she did yesterday in Milan? I mean, see through lace with satin red underwear and leopard clutch? Can anyone top it off, can they??!

Collage Sunday, 30.05.10

CollageSunday-30.05.10-CatherineBabaI decided to create today's Collage Sunday around the amazing Catherine Baba. She's the most exquisite stylist I know of and her personal style is très magnifique. There is this kind of 20's dapper meets 30's glamour via a trip through Asia. I love how she mixes prints and textures and, specially, how she accessorises and does her make up. Behold.
Check out this video of Baba at the Hyères 2008 festival interviewed by the also iconic Diane Pernet. I've always thought she should have her own TV show like Rachel Zoe. Baba is like an über-European, super sophisticated version of Zoe. I could listen to her talk all day. Voilà, J'adore.

stars aligned

Right, so I am not going to try and convince anyone of it but this is the kind of moments that make red carpet events worth it for me. Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling hit the Cannes festival this morning promoting their new film "Blue Valentine". I have been a pretty big fan of the two for a very long time —ever since 'Dawson's Creek' with her and 'The Young Hercules' with him. I was in awe of Michelle's new platinum blonde hair-do when I first saw it and Gosling is so cool he really can do no wrong (check out his airport look on the left). When they come together even fashion seems unimportant, so I don't care much for 'who' she was wearing.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
I tried to find the trailer but it seems it hasn't been released yet even though the film is out this year and it was shown previously at Sundance. Instead, have a look at this clip from the film. there seems to be great chemistry between them so I can't wait to see what the film is like. In the meantime, don't miss Gosling's 'Half Nelson' or 'Murder by Numbers', two really good movies.

I'm off.

PS. And sorry for the über-cheesy title. I couldn't help myself.

McLoveStory

Cannes 2010 just rolled out the red carpet today and what could easily be the best fashion moment has already happened. The greatest thing about Cannes is that we get extra looks, as the actors first pose by the dock on their arrival and then change for the photo call by the red steps of the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.
Cate Blanchett made my jaw drop this morning —literally. She arrived at the festival in a pale pink Giorgio Armani Privé (see here) that together with her fair skin and blond hair instantly made me think of Grace Kelly. It was the kind of beauty you don't see every day. Later, for her movie premiere (and after a lot of twitter rumours) she slipped into a Pre-Fall10 Alexander McQueen dress. The gigantic eagle plastered across the front of the dress might make you cringe at first but if you look at the whole you will realise how it somehow works on her. She looks like royalty. After all, that is what the eagle has always symbolised .

Cate Blanchet is extremely faithful to her dress makers —you'll rarely see her out of an Armani, a Balenciaga or a McQueen. But it's with the latter that Cate has a love affair with. Some of her best (and my favourite) fashion moments have been courtesy of Lee. There has been the odd mistake but even then she looked graceful and beautiful.

give me a Q

The latest news concerning McQueen's death surfaced yesterday closing his suicide case writing the last dark line of the designer's tragic story on the same week that the F/W10 look book of his diffusion line, McQ, is published.
As it turns out, Lee was under the effect of a mixture of cocaine, sleeping pills and tranquillisers that lead experts to believe he "killed himself while the balance of his mind was disturbed". This raises many 'what if' questions that will never have an answer and makes the story of his death all the more tragic.

Ironically, Alexander McQueen's last (?) designed line takes inspiration from iconic rockstar Kurt Cobain. And I mention irony because it was in a similar manner that Cobain's life came to an end. For his F/W10 line, the British designer mixed leopard-print coats, patched-up jeans, checked shirts and white-framed sunglasses —epitomes of the grunge aesthetic and staples of Cobain's look. A collection of a strong point view, notes of Punk and scattered remarkable pieces as an homage to an icon, from another icon.

Spanish flair

It's quite funny how particular doses of Balmain and Isabel Marant can easily lead one to believe that a female who often walks the Tuileries in them is Vogue Paris staff. And that was exactly what I assumed about Bárbara Martelo until only a few weeks ago. The truth is this stunning brunette is a Spanish Voguette. I am yet to purchase the March issue (Anja on the cover, woop!) and see what work she's produced lately. But considering she can pull off the multi-coloured Marant fur coat, I am expecting excellence.

tru style

I'll admit it, Alexander Skarsgard makes me green (as beautiful as his shirt) with envy. Everything from the blue puppy eyes to the blond hair to his 6' 4" (1.93 m), I'd choose for myself. But all of these traits would be of very little use if he didn't know how to dress. I like the fact that he always opts for simplicity (Acne Swedishness *cough*) and that he knows how to give the little touches and add the little details that make the difference —the t-shirts that are tight and loose in the right spots, the jeans and sleeves rolled up exactly right. He could very well be the epitome of the manly fashionable guy. [This blog post goes out to you, P.]

Oh, oobee doo I wanna be like you

Every season I wait and I wait to see his picture on The Sartorialist and Jak & Jill. But it never happens. The reason why someone as cool and delightfully sartorial as Derek Blasberg (editor of fashion news and special projects for V and VMan magazine) doesn't get his well-deserved mentions completely escapes me. On top of V and VMan he is also in charge of the people and parties column of style.com and often writes for Harper's Bazaar and the Sunday Times and Interview. If a successful career wasn't enough, he can proudly say he counts amongst his friends the über-cool Mary-Kate Olsen (he edited "Influence"), Rachel Zoe and Leigh Lezark. I suppose that, in a way, he is cooler than everyone else precisely because of all this. So I will continue to enjoy his perfectly put-together outfits that include the kind of jumpers and sock colours my wardrobe longs for.

the pearl of Liberty

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
I couldn't believe my eyes the first time I saw her live —in a beautiful outfit including a belted sequinned sleeveless jacket and those beautiful curled locks. She flowed from room to room greeting people and casually posing for pictures. She was even more beautiful than Scott Schuman or even Garance could convey. That's why when I was introduced to her I barely remembered my name. But, during that short hiatus of elation, she was as nice and charming as her smile.

VIVA Kate!

May's issue of Vogue España came out full of nice surprises to celebrate the magazine's 20th birthday. The biggest of them, en exclusive four-cover spread with icon of icons and model of models Kate Moss. Inside, one of Spain's most famous singers from the 80's, Alaska, writes a remarkable and cunning retrospective. Read it below.

How many news Kate generates! Every time I was about to write this reflexion, more updates offered me a new argument. During these last days she bought a London cab and drove her friends around, presented her new line for Top Shop, went running around Amsterdam spreading the word of her engagement, was kicked out of the Pére-Lachaise cemetery in Paris for dancing on top of Jim Morrison’s grave and, finally, I saw her arriving angry to an airport and charging at journalists with the luggage trolley (her daughter acting as a boat’s bow) —all this, in five days.
What a gold mine of content-less information. But let’s not lose perspective. Despite or because all this, Kate Moss is the millennium change icon paradigm. Actresses were those who reigned during the 20th century, those to imitate, to dictate aesthetic and behaviour rules, to be the centre of scandals that we now tenderly recall watching from the perspective of time. Just like Marlene Dietrich or Katherine Hepburn imposed trousers for women. Mannequins, for the concept of supermodel was scarcely applied to a couple of the preferred superstars of photographers like Avedon and who barely had coverage outside the catwalk or publications such as Vogue, adapted to fashions imposed by films and other sacred giants of fashion, like Coco Chanel, another untameable, or Dior’s New Look and Balenciaga’s stitches.
The seventies put an end to all established system, industrial, cinematographic, musical, sexual. Models started to be known by their names and iconic looks. Twiggy was not the prettiest, there was Shrimpton for that, but she created the obligation of looking at these girls like more than clothes hangers forever. Actresses surrendered to the requirements of new looks. In Rosemary’s Baby Polanski portrayed Mia Farrow’s metamorphosis from demure into sort of an awkward Twiggy with a haircut that went down in history. What happened next is known history. Models have turned into actresses, singers, entrepreneurs, exemplary mothers, girlfriends of rockers, TV hosts, footballers wives. Sometimes they adapt to convention and sometimes they’re impossible to restrict. Like Kate.
Moss has an irreproachable 20-year career where she has always given what a model should offer: attitude and an expressive face and body capable of mutating like a chameleon without losing her own essence. What she does with her personal life is her business. It seems absurd to me either stigmatizing or idolizing her rebel attitude which, strengthened or not, sells well. When she appeared on the tabloids caught in the act of satisfying her addictions, our inherited old-fashioned rationality made us think her career was done. But we are in the 21st century and the ways of reason are those characteristic of our time —full of turns. Far from shutting down, disappear, serve as scapegoat and lower her head, she came through reinforced. I still remember a subsequent Vogue issue were I counted over a dozen publicity campaigns with her image on them. Even though it sounds like the outcome of a story with no moral, it does have something for anyone to learn. You can’t play the victim in life; it does not only make you look awful but it permits to glimpse a low moral sight. It is nobody’s fault but yours. Kate’s grandeur lays in how what happened and what is to occur was like water off a duck’s back for her, explaining only the strictly necessary to know, with no exaggerations or sorrow. The UN is worried because they consider that by covering the exploits of Kates, Britneys or Amys, the press sets a wrong example for the girls wanting to follow their steps. Let’s please leave examples and role models for home, for the family. They have not asked to be followed. Let’s teach our children not to be mere copycats, to choose for themselves. The fact that genetically blessed and effortless thin models exist does not mathematically equal anorexic girls (if it were so, who do obese girls imitate, anyone?). Lowering our heads and blaming “society” for our addictions, disorders and failures is the right way to unhappiness and personal dissatisfaction. We have to be very conscious of the difficult balance of things, of the little dictatorships we are submitted to. Like we are to beauty’s dictatorship. The fact that covers are filled with a handful of extraordinarily beautiful women we would not care to look like doesn’t imply us being unhappy for not having their looks. It is a matter of common sense. That common sense lacked by a lot of little girls and, what is worse, by their families, when they go to a million castings and beauty contests without anyone daring to tell them that they are ugly. Or, being politically correct, that they don’t fit into the current beauty canon. Who can I blame for not being intellectually capable of finishing a degree in a record time? Getting some parts of our body fixed to see ourselves better is different, just as we study for personal satisfaction, not to be awarded the Nobel Prize you don’t deserve. It works the same way with role models. Celebrities’ habits are their business. The only thing I ask for is for them to be that, stars, which seems too much to ask sometimes.
Popularity has to be reached, paid for and survived. Kate Moss is, not only a survivor, but also winner who can laugh at herself and at the industry that at once praises and doubts her. Long live Kate, dancing on top of old idols’ graves or not.

fashion SPROUTS

If there is a reason why I keep going into gossip and celeb blogs, this is it. I love watching the transforming process some celebrities go through and how some of them blossom, turning into truly fashion icons. Whether the reason for the change is a personal view on clothing or a very talented stylist, I do not care. I can appreciate both things as a result of experimenting with fashion, because this is what it is all about, getting to the point where you've found your style.

For the past few weeks —maybe months— this amazingly cute actress has been popping up in blogs everywhere because of the stylish turn she's experienced. Rachel Bilson became extremely famous from her role in The O.C., where Mischa Barton got most of the attention and the good clothing. And something similar happened outside the show. Once the series was over, however, she started this process I've been talking about. The result is this lovely and —I hope— endless list of perfectly composed outfits based on beautiful simplicity and smart clothing. The last pictures of her going to Barney's in NYC coped it all. Behold.

Now, my "surprises" of the day have been MK Olsen and Josh Hartnett. I've always been a fan of Mary-Kate —although it is her sister who has me enchanted— but her last ensemble is definitely one of my favourites.

Nevertheless, if surprises is the topic for today, I cannot skip this. I confess I have been keeping an eye on them since the first time I found out about The Jonas Brothers. Three bros; a 20-year-old, a 18-year-old and a 15-year-old one have proved that you don't need to wait for eternity to look stylish. I assume they have a professional working behind them, but this is only a guess, I'm not certain. Whichever way it is, their looks don't stop atonishing me. I would define their style as sort of a Brit preppy meets American East coast meets ethnic-retro-cool. It's simply unexplainable, but you can't stop looking.
